A heat-vision look for any webcam

This thermal camera online turns your ordinary webcam or phone camera into something that looks straight out of a rescue documentary. Dark areas fall to black and deep blue, mid-tones glow magenta and orange, and the brightest parts of the scene burn yellow and white. The camera above opens with the Thermal filter already switched on. ClickStart camera, allow access, and you’re seeing the world in false colour.

It’s the same full online camera as our homepage, so you can take photos with Space, record MP4 video with R, use the self-timer and burst modes, and switch to any of the other 15 filters with [ and ].

    How the thermal effect works

Real thermal cameras detect long-wave infrared, the heat that every object gives off, with special sensors and germanium lenses. Your webcam can’t do that: its silicon sensor sees visible light, and most webcams also filter out infrared. So instead of temperature, this effect reads the brightness of each pixel and maps it onto a thermal-style palette. The result looks convincingly like heat vision, because faces are usually the brightest, best-lit thing in a webcam shot. We explain the science in more depth in Can your webcam really see heat?

    What people use it for

    • Spooky and sci-fi videos for social media, streams and music clips.
    • Checking your lighting, since the palette makes bright and dark patches on your face obvious.
    • Classroom demos about light, infrared and how camera sensors work.
    • Profile pictures that stand out from the usual selfie.

Tips for a better thermal picture

Light your face from the front so it glows against a darker background. Bump up contrast in the Adjust tab for a punchier palette. If your computer is older and the preview stutters, choose a lower resolution, as the thermal filter processes every pixel. And remember: never use any webcam “thermal” effect to check for a fever, find heat leaks or make safety decisions.

    Private by design

Everything happens locally in your browser. Your video is never uploaded, and photos and recordings stay in your tab until you download them.

    FAQ

    Thermal Camera Online FAQ

Is this a real thermal camera?

No. A webcam only sees visible light, so it cannot measure temperature. The Thermal filter recolours the picture by brightness to give a heat-vision look. For real temperatures you need a dedicated infrared (thermal) camera.

Can I record video with the thermal effect?

Yes. Press R to record MP4 (or WebM) video with sound. The thermal palette is baked into the recording, and photos taken with Space keep the effect too.

Does the thermal camera online work on phones?

Yes. It works in Safari and Chrome on iPhone and Android, with both the front and back cameras.

Why does my face glow “hot”?

Because the effect maps brightness to colour, and a well-lit face is usually the brightest thing in a webcam shot. A white wall or a lamp will also look “hot” for the same reason.
